The basic rules of Baccarat
The goal of Baccarat is to score 9 points with two or three cards – or, in the style of Blackjack, to get closer to nine points than your opponent. It should be noted that the numerical values of the cards range from 2 to 9. Tens and face cards have a value of zero, an ace counts for one point. If your cards exceed a value of 10 points, only the ones digit of your total is taken into account (e.g. the 4 for a total value of 14).
Course of the game
The player to the dealer’s right is the banker and is the first to announce his bet. As a general rule, the total bet of the opponents must be equal to the banker’s bet.
The first card goes to the opponent with the highest bet (Ponte), the next goes to the banker. Both receive two cards each. The ponte now decides whether or not to draw another card, after which it is the banker’s turn.
The player with the higher score (closer to 9) wins the game. A tie is also possible, which invalidates the game. If the banker wins, a percentage of his winnings goes to the casino. It is true that the house advantage in Baccarat is very small.
Baccarat variants
The Baccarat variant described above is the classic Baccarat Chemin de Fer. In Punto Banco (the North American variant of the game), all players compete against the dealer.
